What are the symptoms

Ok, I finally tested some more. With both belts off, revving up to around 3000rpms it sounds like the alternator is still spinning - kind of a high-pitched whine. Doesn't do it every time, maybe 50% of the time. Still no loss of oil pressure or any other indidcation of problems. Could a bent pushrod or a lifter produce this sound? Oil pump maybe?

I think those things would sound much mechanical vs a whine, but I'm not all that sure of that.

I just remembered that my old truck's alternator used to squeak every now and then. It would be worse if the truck sat for a few weeks without driving. Pulled the pulley off a few times and wd-40'd the shaft area and it would go away for a while. Not necessarily a suggestion. I did it, but not sure if it's that good to do.
