Jack all wheels off the ground let her idle in gear and put an extension up to the diff and put the other end to your ear and listen for the rumble. Like Desert rat say's the drain plug will give good info, although my drain plug showed metal 500 miles after a re-build and every time I change the fluid. (About every 5,000 miles).
