Posted 16 March 2014 - 01:53 PM

I figured I would start a thread about my current project. I started a small upgrade on my motor and it has ballooned into a complete rebuild.

So here we go. I started to do a cam swap and fuel system upgrade and I ran into a little problem when I dropped the oil pan. The oil pickup screen was fully of metal shavings. The motor never had a loss of oil pressure or any ticks other than the normal idle tick. After seeing the metal in the pickup tube I decided to go through the entire motor. I didn't want to put my new cam in and then lose a bearing a week or two later.

So, the motor is already out of the truck including the transmission and t-case. Brandon(mid12ss) has been coming over almost everyday on his lunch and helping me work on the truck. I get 1-2 hours a day for lunch so I have been doing all of my work on my truck on my lunches since I have 1 year twin girls at home. They are a handful and I still get to spend all the time with them at night and work on my truck on my lunches. It might take me a little longer but I don't lose anytime at home and it always puts me into a good mood half way through the day.

The short block has been dropped off at the machine shop. The motor didn't have the internals that I was under the impression of it having. So I already had the diamond -15cc dished pistons and I have ordered some scat h-beam rods and some arp main studs for the stock crank. That's what my short block will consist of. The rods are 3-4 weeks out, so I will be waiting on them for a short while. I am pretty much putting all new parts onto this motor. I had dropped my 317 heads off to have them checked and gone through. Both heads had cracks between the valves, so I will have to replace them. I have ordered a new ls2 timing set, gm performance hi volume oil pump, ls7 lifter, and new trays to go along with the stage 2 turbo cam from brian tooley. The cam specs are 226 231 605 598 @ 113+4. Brian said this cam will make peak torque around 6400-6800. So I will be spinning my new setup a little bit higher. I was going to order some trick flow 225cc heads and after talking to Tooley, he talked me into buying a set of the 220cc 65cc heads from trick flow and then letting him do his magic on the heads. He said that when he was done they would flow about the same if not better than the 225cc's. I am way excited to try these heads because not only the performance but they are going to up my compression to about 9.4 from 8.8. This should make my truck way more responsive off of boost.

For my intake and fuel system, I was going to get a holley hi-ram, and Tooley talked me out of it. He said that with his cam and boost, the edelbrock pro flo manifold made more hp than with the holley. So I decided to try out the edelbrock that no one likes. Hopefully it responds well, it sure looks cool! I also got the matching black fuel rails to go with the manifold. I bought a new set of injector dynamics id1000 injectors. Hopefully I have enough injector now! HAHA Brandon and I both bought the newer 04-07 returnless fuel tanks with buckets. The buckets are WAY bigger than the return style that we currently have. I am planning on going with the dual walbro 400's as I believe that Brandon is also. Then I will run a #8an line up to the intake where it will go into a aeromotive y-block and then split into dual #8 feeds and they will go into the front of each rail. Then the return out the back of the rail and run separate returns in a #6 to the regulator. Then the return out of the regulator will run over to the stock supply line and return through it.

Then the next thing I am doing is something that should have been done over 5 years ago. Brandon drove 400 miles last week to pickup 2 4l80 transmissions for us. They are currently sitting at a local builder waiting for us to get our billet input shafts so he can put them together for us. I also am going to be getting another precision industries converter. I am had nothing but excellent results from my current 4l65 converter from P.I. It is a 3k stall but I think I will be going to either 3200 or a 3400 stall on this setup to go with the cam. My current turbo will probably not keep up with this setup in the higher rpms. It is a master power t-76 .96ar turbo. I am pretty sure I will be going to a turbonetics 76/76 turbo. My current hot pipes are from kbracing and I have the 3.5inch downpipe. I am pretty sure that downpipe is what is holding me back from going to a bigger turbo setup. this might have to be addressed later down the line.

My current goal with this new setup was 800-850hp, but since there isn't even a awd dyno in the state that will fit my truck I will just set my goal to a low 11 sec 1/4 pass. Hopefully this is attainable with this setup. I have other things that I am doing also and I will try to cover them in here (caltracs, changing meth system, drag radials, etc. I took a trip to Vegas about 2 weeks ago and I talked with Zippy about this whole setup and he helped me fine tune a few things to make tuning a little easier. I will be using him for my tuning. I will be posting pics from my cell phone because I don't have any on my computer, and it's just easier. I'm sure I forgot some things, but they will eventually get covered.

Those fillings in the 4th last pic look like machine chips. Almost like whoever did your block prep didn't clean that crap out before the engine was assembled. I've seen this happen with industrial mechanical equipment, but never automotive. Also, just curious, if you went through the trouble of boring it out to a 370, why didn't you throw a stroker crank in there and get the extra cubes?

It is already .030. I am going to stick with the stock crank. If I went to a stroker crank I would have to upgrade my hot pipes now. And that's not in the budget. I think the short stroke will spool up fast. I hope.

Raising up the compression with those smaller 65cc camber heads should definitely wake your truck up and make it better to drive off boost. I'll be watching this build, now just get Brandon to post up his build lol.

Some of those metal shavings are from not enough care being taken when installing the turbo oil return.

Very nice build you have going on! I love my Edelbrock Pro Flo tunnel ram. I lost a little bottom end (under 2500 rpm), but she sure did wake up after that!!!! Plus it looks good.

Agreed. That intake looks awesome! Especially with the polished 90mm TB
It's gonna be a monster. Can't wait to see/hear this truck when it's done. You can hear the turbo whistling through his 4" exhaust at idle. It's pretty intimidating. It was fast as hell before. Drove to the track with all his luggage in the back seat, tow package and spare tire intact, ran a 12.3 and drive home. Lol! And he was out of fuel on the top end... Now with an insane fuel system, new intake, crazy insane heads, new cam... This will be a 10 second truck no doubt.

Your crazy Brandon. I just love how close our short blocks and some of the other specs are. Basically is blower vs. turbo. It's going to be really fun at the track with us side by side!

Thanks. I'm pretty excited about it.

Do you have any pics of yours installed? I'd like to see them. I really wanna clean up my harness and vacuum lines. Cleaning up under the hood is going to be one of my priorities.

Wow man nice build, glad to see that you have time to make a little progress everyday and still spend time with your twins. Where did you pick that intake up,? Been searching for one but cant find one with cathedral shaped ports like that one

I ended up just getting it from summit racing. There is two different ones with cathedral ports. They have an ls1 and an ls2 version. The only diffrence is the ls2 has a throttle body bore for the 90mm and the ls1 has a bore and bolt pattern for the stock ls1 throttle body.

Ok cool, but they will both bolt up to the stock 317s correct? the ls2 sound a little more better since you can run the 90mm imo

correct.  That is the one I went with.  Then I bought a 90mm on another site for 200 bucks.  Then an x-link for 225 new, and your set.
