Cost To Rebuild Front Diff?

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

My 2004 SS had a front diff howl that reached the point that something had to be done. The first diff specialist I went to wanted to replace crown wheel & pinion, bearings and seals because in his opinion if you could play a tune on the throttle it must be crown wheel etc. His quote was $1,900.00 plus parts and labour, or $4,500.00 in round figures and around three weeks to get everything together & sent to New Zealand!

So what about Chev tough and all the blurb - I've only done 69,000 kms.

I sat on it for a couple of weeks and tracked down another diff specialist half a mile down the road from the first one who builds diffs for race cars and dragsters. What he has discovered is that the spacer creating the pre-load in the front diff cannot withstand the constant pressure and it gets munted, moves and you end up with slop in the diff that eventually causes the bearings to fail. He does a mod to a replacement spacer and anchors it to prevent it moving. Problem solved once and for all instead of having to return as successive replacements of the standard parts continue to fail.

So far so good. The truck is back to its old quiet self on the road and my bill was $1,250.00.

I talked to a guy today about rebuilding my front-end and I thought he was a little high. Put all new updated stuff in it bearing, seals, restrictors and he wants 881.00 for me to take it (front-end) to him or 1081.00 for it and he remove it out of the truck. He will also give me a 6 months warranty and on out second phone conversation he said he would honor things up to a year. I was going to pull it but the weather is looking bad for next week when I would possible be installing it so I'm thinking the extra 200.00 would be worth it.

Sorry no pics.

I'll see if I can get more specific details

Thank you for contributing this - I might take my extra carrier to a guy here in Ft Worth and look that over.

Mr. P. :)

BTW - that's the first time I've hear a ring gear called a "crown wheel" before

Mr.P my guy says you must be bumping into the wrong people or driving on the wrong side of the road - LOL :D

How he described things is that the carrier adjuster nuts have lock tabs that fail in service. In his first attempt on another Chevy he installed genuine brand new parts and they failed inside a week.

His solution is to drill and tap the case to take locking bolts. Then the assembly cannot move. This mod would apply to any AWD GMC truck or SUV so if someone was onto it the could make a killing. Chevrolet doesn't have a fix for this.

Hope this helps. Regards

Andy

Excellent news!!! That sounds easy enough to accomplish to avoid pinion and crown gear damage. Thanks!
