Whipple Q&A

I had a couple of questions that I asked Vince at Whipple and thought I would post them and the answers here, in case anyone else had the same questions.

Questions:

Vince-

I just thought of a couple of questions for you.

I was looking at a copy of the installation instructions at

superchargersonline.com and noticed that 92 octane gas is required. I

have looked at ARCO and Shell so far, and both only offer 91 octane. I still

need to check a 76/Unocal station to see what they have, but it looks like 92

octane is a bit hard to find here in SoCal. Will 91 octane work, or will I have to

use octane boosters with 91 octane gas?

The other question I had was regarding the timing of the release of the supercharger for the Silverado SS. You had mentioned it was a simple matter of some paperwork. Do you have any idea how long this would take after the release if the truck?

Thanks - Dave

Answers:

Dave,

If you live here in CA, we are pretty much the only ones that are

subject to using 91 octane fuel. The revised instruction manual states that

a minimum of 91 octane fuel is required. Do not use octane booster for any

reason. We are waiting for the truck to be released so we can schedule an

install and ECU calibration check. We feel that the standard kit should

bolt right on but will need to put the diagnostic equipment on to determine

if the ECU calibration is different. We feel that with the new emissions

for 2003, the ECU calibration will be slightly different. Since we have a

kit very similar on the market that is approved by CARB, it should be a

matter of paper work to get it a CARB #. I would hope that we can have a

kit to ship atleast 1-2 months after the release of the SS.

Well, the way my old S-10 keeps breaking down :( , I may have to get one of the first available SSs. I was planning on waiting till the hysteria died down in hopes of getting a better deal :D

At least the ol Impala still runs :)

I have a 99 with a 5.3 that is Whipplecharged here in California. I have been lucky to have no detonation, many people do have some sort of pinging in SoCal from what I have read. With the higher compression of the SS's motor, there might be some problems with detonation with the 91 octane crap gas.

I was reading up at Kenne Bell's website, and they supply a different pulley for California orders. It reduces boost by 1 psi to accommodate our 'politically correct' gasoline. You know, if the weather wasn't so nice and the Sierras so beautiful, I would really be tempted to leave.
