HOW-TO: Replacing Your Thermostat

Great instructions. Finally got around to installing my stat and water wetter today. Took longer than I expected, but only because the Volant is such a pain to unhook and move out of the way. Man that thing fits tight. The wierd thing was, I could not get the truck warm enough to get the stat to open. It idled for 10 mins or so while I was purging the system and it never got above 185. Finally gave up and took it for a 15 min ride and it still stayed that cool the whole ride. It did take more coolant a few times, but it never got warm, let alone hot. Hope everything is okay. Guess I will find out on Tuesday when it warms up to 85 again.

Yeah I have a bit to add on my 160-degree thermostat install: The OEM radiator core is *barely* adequate for the truck. As the outside temps go up, so will your engine coolant temps. I drove from northern Texas to Houston at night in 90-degree weather and the needle was solidly pegged at 205 the entire 5-hr trip. My return trip home two nights later was in 75-degree weather and the dash guage displayed a coolant temp of 180-ish; passing slower traffic (80 to 100-mph WOT blasts) would immediately bump the temperature up to 205 again, but it would cool back down to 180-ish over the next few minutes. I will install an upgraded radiator core as budget permits.

I am leaving to drive to vegas in 4 days, my PCM is tuned for a 180 Degree stat. However due to deployments I have not been able to swap out my stat. Will I be safe to drive down there with a stock stat?

Short answer: personally I would not worry about it and would drive it as-is. Everything depends on your tuning, specifically how aggressive your timing is. Under 'typical' applications yes you may encounter a degree of detonation as the coolant temp goes up; if it is slight (the knock sensor doesn't hear it) then you can expect to loose a little mileage, if it's enough to trigger the knock sensor then the PCM will pull timing out of the engine until it is satisfied (engine will be sluggish and down on mileage). The only one that can answer this question for you authoritatively is the person who provided your tune.

Have a safe trip and stop to smell the roses!

Can someone list where I can get the new housing and 160 stat for the '03 trucks please. Is this a GM part? If so just post the part# for me and I'll take it from there. I dug around the GM performance parts website as well as gmpartsdirect.com but didn't see any reference to this :sigh:

Thanks!

:chevy:

Edit:

Nevermind, looks like I found it at TByrne

As for 04+ t-stat installs It is much easier than the 03 Just make enough room to get to the housing by removing the air box/tube. I recommend leaving the hose on the housing it is just one step that isn't really needed. Put your catch pan under the housing and remove the 10mm bolts prior to installing the new 160 stat if you look at it there is a notch in the o-ring you need to make sure this lines up with the tab in the housing. I removed the little "rivet/plug" in the hole that is in the stat this will aid in bleeding air through the system so it doesn't get an air lock. I did this in my 04 SS and all I did to check the system for air was remove the coolant line running through the bottom of the throtte body to be sure it had a constant flow. I never had a problem with it. Just double check coolant level after taking it for a short drive (around the block ect..) this should take you about 10 min. or so for the complete swap and you should lose approx. 2 gal of coolant durring the install.

Trying to bump this to the top so I can see it.  For some reason I only have one page on How-Tos and only 7 are on that page.

Go to your "my controls" link (just below and left of the "search" link). On the left hand side of your controls, under the "Options" heading you'll see "Board Settings". Go in there and see how many topics per forum are supposed to be displayed (I have mine set at 40). You can also change the amount of threads per post displayed per page...

I doubt it's that cause on every other forum I can go through different pages of old stuff.

Did you try it to see if it worked? Every forum is a little bit different.

Edit- you can aslso do this, and see all the posts. Change the drop-down menu from 30 Days to Show All.
