  1. I figured it had to be the backing plates based on the grinding sounds. Thanks, I appreciate the help. Ill see if I can do a little moving around back there to fix the problem.
  2. Had another question regarding these AC Delco brake shoes. I got mine all back together finally and seems like they are grinding a little bit on both sides. It could also be the new backing plates I replaced as well that could be dragging on part of the rotor. Either way...is it common for the new brake shoes to grind slightly until they are worn in a bit or no?
  3. Thank you for the extra help, Im hoping I didnt get the spider gears all spun around in there in the process of working on the c-clip. The driver side rear axle went right back in and sets in place, so I think I should be good but I just need to work with getting the c-clip back in. All the videos make it look so much easier than what it really is haha. Ill keep working at it, I am in the process of finding the right brake pads in the meantime. Speaking of my luck with this vehicle...ACDelco sent me the wrong brake pads, as fate would have it. I know the topic has been discussed on here but can anyone direct me to a good link to pick up some rear brake pads? Im now 0 for 2 with ACDelco in receiving the correct parts. I have heard that the Hawk pads are really good as well as the Yellow Stuff pads. Any word on the Bendix pads or even Power Stop pads?
  4. No worries, I always seem to get myself jammed up on the simplest tasks with my vehicles. Case and point....the rear driver side axle came out real nice after I played around with the c-clip for quite some time but now as I work on the rear passenger side, the axle barely pushes in far enough to expose the other c-clip. Is that normal? The axle should push in slightly to expose the clip a little like the opposite side. Maybe I need to turn the drive shaft a bit or something? Any ideas?
  5. I am gonna give them a shot as well. I saw your other post SSmoothSilSS and Ill take your word for it. Found a good set of 25 for $12 bucks and free shipping. Cant beat that! Ill let ya know how they work out.
  6. So the two piece backing plates are fantastic, the only fuss is trying to get them around the ebrake clasp but definitely worth it if you want to avoid the hassle of pulling the axle. Sure enough though, my luck, I am working on getting the new brake shoes in place and just when I think I am in the clear..I snap off a small bolt while installing the brake shoe retaining clip. Well now it looks as if Ill be pulling the axle anyway to drive out the bolt I snapped off. Oh well, maybe next time Ill take it a bit slower. Either way, for future reference for those who are taking on this task rather than letting the auto shop charge you $400 for the task...the OEM part number for the 2 piece backing plate is 12476287 and the Dorman part number is 924-222.
  7. I thought that also for a moment but double checked the part #88967122 which is the correct part number for my 03 SS. I wonder if they just tossed in the newer style clip instead of the older style. Looks like something i can work with, will just have to find different screws.
  8. I just picked up the AC Delco brake shoes from Rock Auto and started to get them put on as well as the backing plates. Backing plates are on and ready to go but as for the shoes Im wondering if I received the wrong clip or screws for them. The clips seems as though it would work out however the 8mm screw that is provided is to large to fit in the hole for it. Am I just an idiot or has anyone else had this problem? Im sure i can find the appropriate hardware for the clip but does anyone happen to know the threading for the 8mm bolt? Heres a picture to help out a bit Thanks
  9. Ah lucky, $35 bucks is a steal man! lll have to see how many of mine i can salvage and use some double sided tape for the time being
  10. Started to look a little closer at those fasteners that are much cheaper and i believe those are slightly different than the GM factory ones. The part number is GM 1518809 if im not mistaken. They are just a bit deeper than the ones that are much cheaper. Im assuming id run into trouble trying to make those ones work. I may have to go with the double sided tape route for a while. Anyone know if I am correct on the part number? http://www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/gm-retainer-15188009.html
  11. Awesome! 0.60 a piece is a lot more appealing than 6 bucks a piece. Thanks a lot guys! I was searching a different part number and only bringing up GM factory websites for replacement parts. I believe those are the correct ones Downeast Johnny
  12. I just came across the outrageous price for the rear bumper step pad clips and cant believe $6 a piece. Any chance anybody has a few laying around the garage somewhere? I dont think i can get myself to drop over 100 bucks on something so simple!
  13. I certainly like that idea better than fusing with the axle and everything. Will have to pick up a set and ill keep you posted on the fitment on them.
  14. I just sent in an order for the one piece backing plates and new shoes, both ACDelco brand. I didnt know we could use the 2 piece backing plates on our SS's. If thats the case i may go that route instead of going through the headache of removing the axle, even though it doesnt appear to be to tough. Does anyone know for sure if the two piece backing plates are compatible with out SS's?
  15. Looks like ill be taking on the task of changing my parking brake and backing plates due to the fact that $400 is quite the quote from the shop. Ive come across several write-ups on the process and hopefully wont run into to much trouble. Can anyone tell me the shoes and backing plates that are most recommended for our SS's? Ive heard the ACDelco ones are good quality when it comes to the shoes but not to sure about the backing plates. Wanted to check with some of you guys on here before dropping the cash. Thanks
