  1. Before you start replacing parts because you think they might be bad;  Find a GOOD professional mechanic / shop and pay them to figure out what is really wrong with the truck.  I can't believe that there aren't any competent mechanics in the Oakland area.

It could easily save you money and aggravation in the long run.

  2. If the chafed high tension wire was causing the problem it would be a very regular and heavy miss.  The bad spot on the wire is far enough away from metal that it probably doesn't arc to anything, (As in a ground), (other than the bolt end that chafed it and that wouldn't happen until the bolt was turned to the wire at the same time that that cyl was firing).  The high tension wire is not chafed all the way to the conductor in the center of the wire.  Only the outermost covering is chafed.

Mike might have it figured out, but I am surprised that a clogged cat doeesn't show up in a scan.

  3. General opinion, for years around here, has been that a tune is your best "bang for buck" mod.  If money is tight I would start with a CAI and 160* thermostat, and tune.  I use Zippy, FTW.

Problem areas are 4L60 trans and front diff.  Shift kit and Vette servos, at least, for the trans.  Swap to full synth gear lube in the front diff.  At 112K, the front f=diff has probably been re-built at least once.  Just keep your ears open for bearing whine.  That's usually the sign that it's going.

  4. I recently decided i would take my Camaro to pick up a couch. Since its a 2 door car with rear seats and a trunk and it was meant to do daily tasks I figured it would work. I was sadly mistaken and realized i needed to bring my Yukon. Wimpy car! Useless! :jester::crackup:

     Lovin it.

  5. Many rebuilt front diff's have held up just fine. Find a competent mechanic and get a quote. Look for an estimate between $1,00o to $1,400. The rebuild should be a good bit cheaper than buying a new unit and having to pay to have it installed.

GM recommended that these diff's got a fluid change at 500 miles. I've read many threads about front diff's over the years and most people are surprised to learn that the fluid was supposed to be changed at 500 miles. (Break in period.) In my opinion, that was a contributor in many differential failures.

Once you get the diff rebuilt do that 500 mile fluid change and go with Mobil 1 full synthetic diff fluid.

My diff needed a rebuild when I got the truck, at 40,000. The rebuild has 60,000 on it, (with Mobil 1 synthetic), and is doing fine.

Not saying anything against transmission shops but you shouldn't need one for the diff rebuild. A good mechanic's shop should be able to handle it. Ask about differential repair experience. (Front or rear).

  6. Candied Bacon,

More a snack than a main coarse meal item.

Baste thick cut bacon strips with real Maple syrup, add your favorite rub and let marinate overnight.

Heat up your smoker to 225*, sprinkle your marinated bacon with brown sugar, then Smoke at 225* for an hour, turn the bacon over, baste the other side with Maple syrup, add more rub if you want, sprinkle with brown sugar and smoke side 2 for another hour.

Off the smoker and boxed up. Now the tough part; Put it up in the refer for 8 or more hours. It will firm up the bacon and allow the flavors to mix / marry up. Trust me; It's better than eating it right off the smoker.

Boxed up and ready for a rest,

Like I said at the start; This is more a snack, treat, or side than a main dish item. I had some the next morning with fried eggs on toast buttered with butter I smoked last cold spell.

Here's a pic showing the diff between regular and smoked butter. Trust me; modded butter, (Smoked), is awesome.
