A high-output alternator upgrade is suggested for trucks with any efan kit as these draw 35-amps at high speed; the stock Delco 105-amp alternator will get you by but barely! If you already have a taxed electrical system then this extra electrical load might be more than your alternator can supply and the fans will be drawing off your battery when they kick into high speed. If you are unsure of your vehicle's alternator and electrical requirements please ask us, we will be happy to discuss your application with you and determine if you can use your existing alternator. The 140-amp Delco alternator is made with several different styles of electrical connectors, make sure you get one that is correct for your truck - for GM trucks 2004 and older you want the 145-amp Delco alternator and accessory belt off of a 2003-2004 Z71 Tahoe. I saw a stock of these factory alternators being sold by Lingenfelter for $100 but it now appears they are all sold out, we're still searching for an affordable solution here. You can never have too much alternator.

OK I got a PM with a product question, and I thought I would quote and answer it here for evryone's benefit -

 

My PCM is still locked, so I won't be able to program my specific fan controls (via PCM) yet, but I'm no beginner to wiring so I'll figure something out... Just out of curiosity, what function does the "control box" provide if this kit is PCM/switch controlled?

 

The control box contains three relays and proper fusing, it is functionally equivalent to the GM e-fan control harness, except after doing the math I concluded that 10-gauge wiring was necessary to correctly power the fans and keep voltage drop under 5% so all wiring is generously sized, the main power lead is 6-gauge; second difference is that the control box is mounted low on the radiator core support to keep harness wiring as short/neat/clean as possible and also leaves the extra room inside the truck's electrical center for other mods you might already have (or have planned) that you want to conceal, in my case I already have a PLX wideband controller mounted inside the electrical center so the efan control box was designed to be located next to and below the battery tray, ahead of the PCM.

 

The green and blue trigger wires are normally connected to the truck's PCM (computer) so that it can control the activation of the fans, but if you cannot program your PCM or get a tuner to modify your PCM then it is possible to manually activate the fans by just grounding the green or blue trigger wire, in fact this is how we test them! If you ground the green wire, the fans come on low speed, if you ground the blue wire you get high speed (btw the trigger wire colors match the OE wiring sceme). So if you wanted to manually control your electric fans you just run the two wires to one side of a simple toggle switch, then ground the other side of the toggle switch (there is very little current present in the trigger wires, so a micro switch can be safely used). If you want to be fancy you can add your own low-current relay to ground the trigger wires when the ignition is hot, but I would not recommend that as your alternator will be taxed 100% of the time rather than the efans cycling as-needed, not to mention they will be running at freeway speeds when they're not called for (the PCM programming automatically turns off the fans above 45-mph).

 

The recommended install, and the install we guide you through in our instructions, is to connect the green and blue trigger wires to the PCM and then have it reprogrammed (tuned) to operate the efans automatically. Although it is possible to toggle the efans on and off by hand we DO NOT recommend this as the dash coolant temperature guage is NOT accurate by design, and with the needs of driving your engine can get overheated without you realizing it until too late. For those that want to activate the fans without the PCM I would suggest getting a separate electric fan controller box that has a external radiator thermostat, several companies make them including SPAL, they run anywhere from $75 - $150.

Thank you for the compliment - yes, I discussed the switch above; just hook-up a $3 manual switch as described and you're in business.

steve, what are you ect's with this kit?

 

im talking from highest to lowest in moderately hot weather? im not really looking to switch but id like to know the difference in ect's from these and the factory fans.
