Supercharged 4.3

Was wondering if any of you guys raced someone with a supercharged 4.3 v6? Supposed to make around 250hp and with exhaust and headers probably 280. Reason I'm asking is because I was thinking about keeping my 4.3 and just supercharging it as it would be cheaper than doing a 6.0 swap. Since I can't turn a wrench it will likely be 3-4K to get the 6.0 swap done maybe more. And since it's my daily it has to be reliable and not doing the swap right can screw me over. Just want to maybe be able to go neck and neck with an ss and not get gapped lol. And then in a few years probably get a v8 single cab and clone that as v8 to v8 engine swap is easier and I might just turbo the 5.3 which would be easier. Not looking to get 10s but would like to compete with some v8s. Opinions?

Honestly sounds like flushing a lot of money down the drain for results less than what you could get out of a stock 5.3 swap. Also 4.3's aren't known for being exactly durable; boost it and scatter it all over the ground is the most likely result.

The current body style Silverado 4.3's are 285 N/A horse out of the box, so its possible. I think a better option would be a junkyard 5.3 swap would be easier and cheaper base to build power on. Maybe try to find an L33 for a little extra zing.

I know you can make more hp with a v8 but doing the swap is gonna cost $4k when all said and done or I slap a wynjammer on for less than 3k

Also my work situation won't allow me to be without a vehicle for more than 2 days and that's the weekend when shops are closed.

I've seen 4.8s and 5.3s go off craigslist for $500-$700 all day long. I was going to say that would be a good option for a budget build until I saw Richard and Matt already mentioned it. If you shop around some you will probably make it out cheaper with the V8 as far as parts go, I'm sure you could find someone or a shop to swap it out at a decent price too. If you haven't already, I would call around your area and see what they are going to charge to put the supercharger on vs a v8 swap in labor. I would hate to see you spend a lot of money on the V6 and lose to someones 4.8 or 5.3 with a few bolt ons.

I can install the supercharger no problem with a few buddies but the reason I'm reluctant to v8 swap a daily is because I can't have it be in a shop more than 48 hours. And if anything in the swap goes wrong then I will likely be stranded until it's fixed. I know a v8 swap is capable of producing more power for cheaper but not looking to go 10s with a v6 just a little kick lol.

i think you should invest that money u would spend on the supercharger on a daily driver car and sit back and punt until u can come up with the funds to buy a 6.0 or 5.3 and then beef it up like u want. Even after u supercharge the v6 there are no guarantees it won't have issues don't care who the mechanic is so u will still be without a truck trying to sort that out in the short amount of time u have. Buy a car and baby your truck like u want to.

Unless your v6 truck has some sort sentimental value just get rid of it and get one with a V8 to start.

The best advice on here..... the 4.3 in your truck was based off the old as dirt 350 with two cylinders chopped off. They were not known for power or fuel economy. They also had a propensity to have intake gasket leaks which lead to bottom end failures when owners neglected them. The 4.3 in the new trucks was a total clean sheet design.... the only thing it shares with the 4.3 in your truck is the displacement size nothing else. The new 4.3 is based from the LS family and is a much better design...... they finally fixed all the short comings the "original " 4.3 had.

Like doughty08 was getting at, while a weekend supercharger swap sounds like it would work on paper, in the real world it rarely works like that. You'll strip a bolt, wreck a gasket, be missing a tool, or they sent the wrong bracket. And it will usually happen at 10:00pm on sunday when everyone is closed, so your on the Huffy express to get to work. Buy a cheap beater so you have a plan B, and start swappin.

Well you guys got me haha. Just gonna do a 5.3 swap unless I can get a 6.0 for a good deal. Tune headers exhaust and maybe a cam would be a hell of a lot cheaper than that whole supercharger set up for the 4.3. Just hoping when me and some buddies do the swap it won't be a pain in the ass. Anyways I'll be posting pics during the whole thing, trying to resurrect this forum a little bit. Thanks for all the input!
