Has anyone done LED headlight bulbs?

Recommended Posts

Kicking around doing LED hi and low headlight bulbs. Curious if anyone has done this and happy with them and kept them in the truck? What brands people have used or what ones to avoid if I do get some.

They put out pretty bad glare for oncoming traffic, which is fine for high beams but not really for lows. They also don't light the road as well as a good set of hids, but those also put out bad glare if they're in the reflector type housings like on the silverado.

Mostly, they're ass.

As said they're not bright enough, and the pattern is all wrong so glare is bad.

The few OEM applications where you see LED headlights they are super expensive high output devices with a housing designed to get the best possible pattern out of them. There's no way you can match this with aftermarket parts, at least not at this time.

OK, sort of a thread jack but...

I'm trying to decide between HB3 and HB4 SilverStar Ultra bulbs or doing the HIR bulb retrofit. I really like the 4000k white color of the SSU bulbs, but I think the HIR bulbs are brighter. Distracted - or anyone else that knows what I'm talking about, what do you think? SSU HB3/4s or HIRs?

Ok you peaked my interest..... so I researched a HIR bulb. Sounds interesting.... anyone running them and do they really work? Would like to see a picture of the light color as well.

Real HIR's are stock yellowish color just like a regular halogen, just brighter. Easy to install them, just a slight trimming of one of the tabs.

You can get real Phillips HIR's even at Home Depot believe it or not, about $20 and change.

If shopping on the net watch out as there's fakes out there. If they start talking about non stock color temps they are fake.

To the best of my understanding when we talk about brightness and temperature (relating to lighting) it's apples and oranges. For example the SSUs I'm referring to are advertised at 4000k (white, between yellow and blue) but I'm not sure of luminosity (higher than standard, but lower than HIRs). I'm pretty sure the HIR bulbs will be brighter ( higher luminosity) but have a color around 3200k (yellowish). The SSUs may appear to be as bright as HIR bulbs, but this is only because they have a cooler temperature. I guess it's all a matter of preference, light output and/or color. Oh, and they don't make SSUs in the 9011 or 9012 HIR bulb so I just have to choose one or the other.

Hmm ok. Well I put the best silver star bulb in a few years ago when I bought the truck. It is a white color not yellow and the light output is almost as good as my high beams. Guess I'll just stick with what I have.

Yeah I personally wasn't too excited about the color temp on the HIR's. I know that technically they're a better upgrade than HID's since the pattern should be closer to the proper halogen capsule, but they just weren't doing it for me. I've got 35W 5000K HID's in mine right now.
