Horrible quick braking

Hi, I have a 04 awd SS that I have been working on. It brakes pretty badly when I bought it. So I got a set of brakes from brake motive(eBay stuff but good quality as I've used them on over 8 cars). Front and rear rotors, and front and rear pads. After I did the job felt like braking got better, I broke them in properly and all. But pedal still felt a little weird. Not really mushy as if it was air in the lines but just not as much pressure as my dads 06 z71. I figured it was because of rear drums. Up until this week where I rear ended some lady after she slammed on her brakes. I couldn't wrap around my head as to how I hit her. So I started slamming my brakes and realized slamming them quick the truck brakes horrible. Compared to as normal driving where foot it on the brake about 25% of the way down then applying pressure. Now I am thinking it COULD be air. But could it be the master or something? The calipers all looked in good shape and fluid is topped off. Just want to fix this before I am hauling something(which I do occasionally, it's why I did all the damn brakes new) and have to stop suddenly.

I noticed a lot of upgrades for the brakes so thought maybe it could just be bad design? But I mean cmon I've had older silverados brake better, my dads brakes better with 33s, even my ram 2500 diesel braked better (a lot better actually). There's no way an SS could brake this bad!

Which btw when I brake quick (although I know it's pretty normal) sounds like I'm trying to pump up a bike tire with the sound the brake pedal makes! Dads silvy does it but his pedal is almost a brick the minute you put foot on the brake and brakes great. Mine really gets tight around halfway!

You could have a problen with your master cylinder or brake booster.... FYI the brakes on the early gen trucks stunk. That is one of the reason GM switched back to rear drum brakes on the half tons beginning in 06.

Two things I would recommend is having a shop with a tech 2 tool bleed the brakes so they can bleed the abs unit, and upgrade to hydroboost. It cost me about $160 using a used pump, lines etc and my truck stops like a sports car since I did that conversion.

Yes I came across that bleeding issue, I am not sure of a shop that could do it, and unless I find more info on how to I don't plan on attacking that myself as the truck is my daily driver.

As for the hydroboost I have been currently reading up on it, have not found a full write up or how to on it. Seems some people T in the lines some people do the pumps? Also there's two different hydroboosts so I'm not sure what exact year I need. Too many questions for me to start tackling that job haha!

Looking into these two.

This one is bidding so not sure how much I can get it for?

This ones obviously more but I like that it brings the pump as well. This one mentioned about the conversions and stated I'd need a brake pedal

Will these work for me? Anything other than the brake pedal needed?

So the second one also has the brake pedal. It's about $300 for everything. So basically all I would need is fluid! But my worry is the fittings. I read somewhere there's two types of model pumps and lines? Which are the correct years for my 2004?

OEM brakes on my 03 were horrible, especially under emergency braking situations. The original breaks are tiny on the early model Silverado with SS being no exception which is GM put bigger breaks on the 05+. The vacuum booster setup is horrid. I upgraded to the hydroboost system and it was 100% improvement. The brakes bite so much harder (hydroboost has more clamping force). I then did the Z06 conversion with SS lines and this thing will stop like a sports car now.

That's great to hear! I am literally piecing everything together this weekend.

Like I said it was so bad to the point that I rear ended some lady!

It was the slowest accident every I literally tapped her and her car crumbled up. All that happen to me were a few scratches and a crack next to the duct which was already there finished cracking lol. Crazy. But lucky me! Living in Miami now my insurance rates Gonna sky rocket, and I'm probably gonna have a lawsuit after me. But whatever as long as she was ok and so was I.

Awesome thanks! And yes I can't wait. I'm gonna be towing a lot. So this is an upgrade im excited about. In fact have to do a run from miami to georgia this weekend! Luckily dads 06 is always on hand. Sometimes I miss my cummins. But I'm so happy to be back in a chevy let alone a iconic one.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got in installed, took long because guy forgot to send one of the lines. Radiator turned out to be cracked as well so went ahead and did that. It's braking awesome now! And pedal and steering are nice and soft but not too soft.

One question though, I remember reading about it when I researched the swap, but now looking into the how to's I had open I can't find it....the plug that would connect to the booster is there a way to bypass that? It's throwing a check engine light and telling me to service the booster.
