Differential service help/recommendations

Recommended Posts

So I'm going to change my front and rear diff fluid and I've done this before and guessing it's strait forward just haven't owned an AWD vehicle so wasn't sure if anything was different besides the normal steps. My SS is a 2003 and I don't have the owners book. Anyone know the fluid amount and weight? And recommendations on brand? Anything I should keep my eyes open for while doing this?

75w140 and I would use redline or am soil severe gear. Neither of which will need any other additives.

And that's for both front and rear diff? Is that what you use? I've tried to researched it a bit but seeing a handful of different weights. I've seen only use synthetic in the front.

75W90 in the front and rear. I use AMSOIL Severe Gear in all my vehicles. The actual capacities are 4.2pt in the rear and 3pt in the front (7.2pt or 3.6qt), so you would need 4qt total. Also, the transfer case takes 4.4pt, or 2.2qt of ATF

Here are links to the products I use.

SG 75W90. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/gear-lube/severe-gear-75w-90/?code=SVGQT-EA

Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/transmission-fluid/automatic/signature-series-multi-vehicle-synthetic-automatic-transmission-fluid/?code=ATFQT-EA

If you're interested, and don't know a local dealer, shoot me a message and I'll quote you. I've got dealer status and should be able to ship it to you for the same, or a little less than if you would buy it local retail.

Yes, that is what I use. I have not used additives, and haven'3t had a problem. I have heard mobil delvac is good stuff, but haven't found it locally to try ever. I wouldn't use Mobil 1 though.

Sorry, I was away all weekend and just got back today. I sent you a pm. I've heard some people say they used the additive with the AMSOIL, but PERSONALLY, I never have in either of the SS's I've had, or in my Trans AM. Additionally, none of the people I've sold to in the past have come back telling me that they needed it. It's $6-$7 more on an order to ship it along with the fluid, so I give the option and if the individual feels that it's worth it to have it and not need it, I'll order it too. I went ahead and got it when I did my first one, and just never used it. It'll let you know with some minor chatter if it will be needed.

Does anyone know if the factory transfer case and rear diff oil are synthetic or conventional? If their conventional, has anyone seen any MPG or performance gains by switching to synthetic?

What about additives? Seems like adding some or not adding some to the rear could be bad and I've seen posts about both.

The locking unit used in GM fullsize trucks (RPO G80) is the Eaton Gov-Loc and you should not use any kind of additive with the gear oil. There's a TSB out regarding this; friction additives that are typical for posi units can cause the Gov-Loc to not operate properly.

I've seen the conflicting information about this but you can rest assured, the Gov-Loc wants regular gear oil, no posi-style additives.
