Front axle went from howling to banging & popping.

Recommended Posts

Well, the front axle on my truck is toast!!! I was lucky to be close to home, so I was able to limp home. It was on my list of things to do, so it didn't come as a suprise. The great part is that it sits in my drive way behind my 02 2500 suburban. The 'burb is behind my 95 2 door tahoe thats sitting torn apart in the middle of my garage The tahoe's 4l60 is in the trans. shop getting a H.D. rebuild with the monster in a box kit and monster converter. I just put new brakes, tires, & exaust on the 'hoe before 3-4 started slipping. Next, pinched between the ss and the 'hoe is the mentioned 'burb. That puppy is getting the following surgery performed, all new ac delco sensors, intake, valley, and valve cover gaskets. New trans. cooler, oil cooler, and inline tube s.s. brake & fuel lines. New a.c. compressor, evaporator, belt & recharge. New pass. side exaust manifold w/ bolts and gm gasket.

No i'm not done!! Also an ac delco fuel pump, a tru cool 40k trans. cooler, new power steering pump & cooler. New idler pully's and belt, new water pump and hoses. Engine, trans., front & rear diff., transfer case, fluids, & anti freeze. New plugs & wires, and I have probaly missed a part or two, but that about sums up that project. I did do new wheel hub bearings, calipers, rotors, & tires last spring. I have used almost all AC Delco parts for this project, found all the best price's at amazon. I am about half way done with my tune up that spiraled out of control.

Now, sorry for venting about having 3 broken Chevrolet's sitting up my drive. I will let y'all know that my '12 1500 4x4 ecsb bowtie is treating me just fine. So my wife get's to drive a rental ford focus while the SS is down until Thursday. Go ahead and laugh at me, but just know that blue oval is parked on the street!!!

So for the good news, Drive train specialists is only 30 miles from my house. So my blue baby is getting a piggy back ride to DTS on Wednesday morning for a much needed front axle full rebuild. I have also ordered up 4 new tires and timken front wheel hub bearings for the SS. Also doing the 13" front brake upgrade with drilled slotted rotors on all 4, hydro boost conversion, e fan install, front bumper mod,& shave the antenna. So the moral of the story is that I have officially spent all of my $$$$$ & that I love my Chevy's. Oh BTW my SSS will never be as fast as my old 98' camaro SS that I sold right after my son was born, but I do love her anyways!!! Love the site to guys, so much info and cool ideas that I can tell you my SSS upgrades will never end!

Yes DTS did the rebuild for me. They did the R & R, new gears, master bearing kit, half of the case, and a few other parts that were destroyed. It ran me $990.00 and it works great. I have put about 400 miles on it since the rebuild, no issues at all. The rebuild took one day, they also replaced the drivers side hub. They supplied a federal mogul piece and charged $160.00 installed. You may want to call a week in advance to set up a day, they are always busy. Just my .02 cents, don't wait on the rebuild , that was what I did and it cost me half of the case. If you just need the axle rebuilt without the case being damaged and needing replaced its $760.00 for them to r & r and rebuild with parts. $650.00 if you bring them your Diff.

I have a question if you don't mind. I just bought a 2003 Arrival Blue SS with 60k miles in KC and drove it back home to Owasso (Tulsa, OK suburb) just before Thanksgiving. I absolutely love the truck but I have a few issues that have cropped up that the seller would not have known about, as they just started a couple days ago. I will stick to the drivetrain related one here. I am hearing a bit of a whine under acceleration from what would seem to be the front end area. This is my first AWD vehicle and I have never had a FWD vehicle need front end work, but I suspect something in the front drive portion of the AWD setup. Any suggestions on diagnosing the problem or sound descriptions you can offer would be appreciated. I will probably just take it in soon but I thought I would ask. Thanks! Jim

Mine side the same thing a few months back.. Slight whine under acceleration and would taper off as I let of the gas... Both front hubs were toast... Easy fix for any shade tree mechanic in a couple hours... Thinks it was right around 240 for both hubs a oriellys

The front differential whining is very common on our trucks, but any reputable drivetrain shop should be able to handle the rebuild easily.

If it just started, then maybe try changing the fluid first.

I had mine rebuilt by DTS, but I removed/installed it from the truck myself. Not too hard of a job, but you have to find just the right angle to get it out and back in.
