marcello7x
So I bought my truck and it has a set of shorties on it. I'm in the middle of installing cam/heads and rebuilding the front diff. Figured with all the spare room from the heads being out I might as well pull the exhaust since its going to be a bitch later due to typical new England rust. So I'm trying to keep the whole truck super budget, BUT don't want to cause any bottle necks. The cam is in the 228 range, heads are lightly ported 799(same casting as 243 z06/ls6 ) at the very least I am cutting out the cats for straight pipes. None of my cars have them and I'm not starting now. Then I'm going to put in an X pipe with a single 3.5" cutout(already have the e cutout) then to 2 dynomax super turbo mufflers going out the back to the stock tip. The flowmasters on there now drone far to much for me. Is it worth the money to get LTs? I'm going to do all the exhaust fab work myself so that is basically "free". To keep it cheap and get the most out of the shorties I could also go up in pipe size off of the shorties. BTW it'll also get 100shot since I have a lot laying around as well. So far keeping shorties, with everything listed I'm still into the truck less than 8k. After these mods, it'll get wheels and a drop and I'm calling it a day. canadianVRss
Go with LTs. Also, I'm confused about you wanting to install one single cut out when you're going to be installing a X pipe??? If you have dual exhaust you need two cut outs and if you have a Y pipe that connects the two banks down stream, why bother having a X pipe at all? If you can't stand the drone now with cats make sure you have some serious noise killing power in the exhaust, (especially with a cam) or you'll really have some drone. Downeast Johnny
You'll need Long Tubes. And two cut-outs.
ballincustoms
Lots of drone my cats aren't even cut out and it's super loud.
marcello7x
Have you guys ever used dynomax super turbos? I have 2 on my 404ci with no cats. The sound suppression is unreal. It's a roadsters, and usually has the dumps open so I don't notice any drone if there is any. http://youtu.be/w1VRK55uuGM I also have one on my catless 1.8T VW. It's a 3"down pipe, to 2.5" resonator to the dynomax and it's almost silent. While magnaflow droned enough to give me a headache in 15-20 min. As for the X think of it similar to 2 Ys with the cutout in the middle. Before it splits to 2 again. I'm going to fab it myself. I'll post pictures once it's done. Muggs
Get long tubes
JC03SS
Go long tubes n dynomax with the built in x pipe. Trucks gonna be loud like stated above. No cats and cam = lots of noise lol my neighbors are all over 100 yards away and they hear me crank up every morning at 5:
marcello7x
Going to buy a set of long tubes come spring. I have it all back together and its way louder than i expected without the cats! I bought everything to replace the mufflers and add the X pipe with the shorties and y pipe exhaust tip. Once i get the headers i'll cut off the stock y and tip. For now this is what she sounds like with just cutting the cats and adding the cam and higher compression heads. canadianVRss
Yeah man, they get loud. time to get that tune dialed in and maybe hit the track when it opens up hu?
marcello7x
New mufflers come in today. Going to try and have it all in by mid-day/End of tomorrow. I don't want to just clamp on the new mufflers. The welds on the rest of the exhaust are disturbing. Im 100% self taught/youtube taught on welding, but i'll post some before and after shots of the welds. Then all of Sunday will be installing a wide-band, some gauges, new oil pressure stepper, and tuning. I need it to get to work on Monday, since a major pothole destroy my wheel bearing on my VW. That coupled with the cold weather screwing with my air bag solenoids, and my ride height being 2.5" off the ground max, make its a pita to drive in the winter and with snow! As for the track, I've never actual been down a drag strip. BUT the truck will probably be the first thing i track once i have the nitrous set up. The only time I've been to New England Dragway was to race in a RallyX event in their dirt parking lot!
Aldofashow
You ain't kidding about the driving being a pita in mass after all this snow we got I've been thinking of getting a winter truck for next winter and parking the SS from now
marcello7x
Here are some pics of last weekends work. Im going to get rid of the turn downs as they were temporary and its too loud considering i'll have a cutout for when i want to be annoying. jsanders347
Who did the welds on the system you removed?
marcello7x
The previous owner, or the shop he brought it too. BUT from the little background story i got from him he seemed like the DIY kind of person. There was even a weld that he couldn't get to hold that had a band clamp over it. Im definitely no pro, i learned from watching youtube, but just taking your time makes a huge difference.
