zachm89
Budget in the money for a tune and have the rear O2s turned off, no worries about codes. Now on to the cutouts. Are you planning on keeping the factory manifolds or replacing them with long tubes? Either way, you can get cutouts in there, but its a pretty tight squeeze. Most guys just run them a bit farther back in the system where there's more room. Thats really just up to you. As far as a bolt on catback, that will also depend on if you choose to keep the factory manifolds and mid pipes or switch to long tubes with an aftermarket set of mids or modify the factory mid pipes to mate up to the headers. There's so many different ways to go about doing it you could end up spending a ton more money in the long run if you don't plan out exactly how you want to do it the first time. SSAWD
Already have Long tube Pacesetters and prefer to run them further back. and Id like to keep the factory mids but if I cut out the cats and replace them with 3" pipes Dont really wanna get a tune in until I get the flat tappet cam in. Blown 346
Any exhaust shop will not remove the cats as its illegal unless they replace them with either high flow or OEM. If you go to a speed shop thats a different story. They will put in piping where the cats used to be.
Tyson1972
^True, but it also depends on the state and county you live in. I'm from Southern Illinois and we don't have emissions down there. I have had my cats taken off at a exhaust shop, they did not have a problem with it and neither did the county when I had it inspected. Now I live in NC and the whole state does a visual inspection and that's it but they have to be there. you can hollow them out and they wouldn't know. Tyson1972
Zach a tune will give your truck a more efficient HP and TQ curve. With out it your throwing parts at the wall hoping it will make more power. You would need to have a base tune then a retune for every upgrade to maximize your performance, and that my friend is a proven FACT. You can upgrade several things at once when you get the parts piled up after you install them a tune is a must.

You can upgrade several things at once when you get the parts piled up after you install them a tune is a must. Why exactly are you directing that towards me? I think I've been around the block enough times to know the benefits of a tune and having a re-tune done for new mods. I think the real problem here is the OP who along with having no idea where to start on his exhaust, is also planning on installing a "flat tappet" camshaft into his LS engine. I mentioned a tune simply because he was wanting to ditch the cats, along with changing up the entire exhaust system. Of course he will benefit from a tune. But no tune in the world is going to help that camshaft selection.
Tyson1972
Zack my apologies I looked at the wrong name it was SSAWD, not you. Sorry about that I was thinking about the flat tappet cam, like WTF. I got the wrong name, it happens that way sorry again.

I also live in a area where there is no emissions. State law in Illinois is any shop cannot remove cats without putting in new ones or your old ones. Otherwise there is a $5,000 fine on the shop. Hollowing them out is fine,
Tyson1972
Rockford is not southern Illinois and the last time I looked who listens to ILLINOIS state law? Same state that brought no firearms to Chicago and look how well that one turned out, lol?!!!
Blown 346
Illinois is Illinois with the laws. I was just stating a fact whether people abide by the law or they dont. But Any exhaust shop that I have been to would not remove cats for the huge fine and going against the law. That doesnt mean you cant do it yourself, or go to a buddies shop and do it. I myself dont have a welder so the shops near me were my first option.
