which amp for 2 jl audio 13.5s

Recommended Posts

Since the jl amps are not strapable. I woud go with the Rockford. If you ran 2 1000/1 and had each sub in its own enclosure with its own port then by all means it doesn't matter which one you choose. You can also have the 2 1000/1 and just gain match them with one of smd's creations and just use a dual sub box like you would the Rockford. A lot more amp choices out there also. Hope you have the electrical to push the stuff.

Most amps will provide higher output if you lower the load. So two 4 ohm dual voice coil speakers in parallel provide a 1 ohm load to the amp. An amp that would push 1000 watts at 1 ohm would usually be around 250 watts at 4 ohm. JL on the other hand has done a great job at making most of their better amps give the wattage rating across all loads. So your 1000/1 would give 1000 watts at 4ohm as it would at 1ohm.

Just putting that out there. To answer your question, the wattage would be divided by however many speakers you would hook to that amp.

Just a heads up, for the price of 2 1000/1 or that 2500bd you could get an amp that would push more power for less money. Do you have any supporting electrical for all this power?

And like Tampa mentioned don't forget to add capacitor and extra batt. And depending if your going to bridge amps probably want to upgrade the alt also. Once you really get over 1000 watts rms it starts to add up. You want to have little extra energy supply hence the extra batt, but also want a quick discharge which helps keep your subs alive if you play it loud. Then the cap comes into play cause it can unload and charge back up quickly. Your subs will take a lot more also if the amp has the current it needs........ cause it wont be clipping. But you will also get a harder hitting bass with the correct amount current availability. Don't know how much knowledge you know about audio. Just putting it out there if you don't. And if you do...sorry about being wordy.

I had 3600 rms and had 250 amp alt, 3 batt total including starter batt, and 4 ferrets of cap. But now days you can get 30- 50 ferret pretty cheap compared to back in the 90's you can never have to much cap.

Well my opinion is run the RF. However if you are open to some brands that aren't so main stream there are several alternatives for a little less. Crescendo is one and sundown is another. My biggest concern would be warranty, and how the company deals with claims. You will probably never need to use it but should you you want to know they back their product.

With that said I run all RF amps and love them. My 2500 produces 3300 @1ohm. And 14.4 volts. I love this amp. As stated above no matter what direction you go, you will need supporting electrical upgrades. I see some here like caps. I personally don't use them. I decided to use batteries made for audio. They have a much faster discharge rate than say a yellow top. My electrical consists of 300amp alt. 1 yellow top for starting with two large kinetic audio batteries. And of course the big 3 upgrade.

To end my rant I will say this. Your audio system is just like any other mod. Once you get to a certain size it requires supporting mods. They pay off if done. Rant over. Let us know what you do.

Ferrets? 40 ferrets in your truck? I'm majorly confused!

LOL ferrets! That truck must be stinky.

I'm not a fan of capacitors. I would rather stack batteries and have constant awesome voltage and never have a drain. For competition burp set ups, capacitors are really awesome. That is, supercapacitors.

lol sorry about that.....one of those late night posts and that is one word that I have to think about and not the worlds best speller........Farad....that looks a little better and less stinky. :fart:

I will agree with you to a point Tampa.....but in my experience I would use caps every time. I don't think that the batt's unload as fast as a cap does from the research I have done. And when you go get one of those big ones the 30+ farad. They do expand your energy source also. The people I have worked with said once you get past what your system needs its like adding extra batt's without all the extra weight and space. And it also depends on how loud you listen to it also.

And you wont notice it as much with sub bass subs....like the earthquake Magma's which were the first of their kind. Now if you go with a more accurate sub like there CP 12's with some BR1070's where it hits you like a freight train..... then you will notice what I am talking about. We ran my system without them and you could tell that it wasn't as tight as they were with them. But we build my system for SQ but we got lucky and hit a grand slam and got one hell of a SLP system along with it.

Also in agreement if your going to do competitions .....you need them. I posted my system and that system wouldn't loose charge either and I was at the point where I could have used an extra batt or 2 for what they recommended for the watt to batt ratio, but I didn't have the space for them so we added a 50 farad and they are cheaper than a batt and take up way less space. But now days with the D series amps you can get by with less charging system than you could with class AB amps. They were just coming out with the D series when we built mine.

The more I listen to the stock system in these SSS's the more I like the cab for imaging and speaker placement. The Bose is actually pretty good sound for OEM. And darn near at the perfect imaging height. And I see they put the tweeters in the piller and face them towards the windshield and depending how tall you sit in the seat you really get some great highs out of them.

The ferret thing was pretty funny. Kidding though, I knew what you were getting at.

Caps are not used to unload faster than batts. A cap is "supposed" to be used to prevent voltage spikes. And the reason the voltage is spiking is because there is not enough juice to back the system to begin with. A cap in the sense of a regular non competition burp system is a bandaid. If you have the batteries and a HO alternator then you will never drop voltage.

If anything a cap is taking power from your system because after it drains in that 1 second, it is having to charge back up.

Only reason people use it for competition is because even 5 batteries and HO alternators cant sustain 10k + watts for 30 seconds. So in addition to a huge battery bank they use supercaps to try and help out. After they make their numbers and do their run, they have to charge those things with no music on.

Not trying to talk down or anything. I just hate when Joe schmo says he needs a cap on his flea market amp to help with voltage fluctuation. You are not Joe schmo, it was an example.

Yeah I see what your saying. I've done a lot of reading on them and from what I understand and I guess I can see what your saying about the spikes and in the end guess that is what I'm kind of saying also. When the bass hits it takes the energy out of the cap to power the amp......and then the batt fills it back up. From my understanding this is where we kind of disagree but from what I have read is that the cap can release the energy faster than the batt's can. And you say with enough batt's you can keep up with drainage that is because you have such a large amount of storage that you wont see a drop that is true, but then you have so much money into the batts and all the space they take. Im saying you can achieve the same end result with less batt's and use of caps. But also believe that you should have enough batt reserve to back your system up. I forget what they say you should have for a ratio of batts for wattage produced. And agree that a lot of people use them as band aids.

And I'm saying with a cap the batt fills it back up.....but will admit that it wont fully be completely charged up because you are constantly having draw on it from the bass hitting when you have it cranked up. But your batt's are your reserve is how I look at it.

discussions like that are really hard to talk about on a forum and can get kind of wordy
